Sowmya was introduced to Carnatic music at an early age by her mother Dr. Revathy Subramanian, a Ph.D. in music. She then learned music for a brief period from Smt. Seetha Rajan. From the age of 15 she has been under the tutelage of renowned Guru, Sangeeta Choodamani, (Late) Smt. Suguna Purushothaman.
Sowmya has participated and won many prized in music competitions conducted by Chennai’s prestigious music sabhas like Music Academy, India Fina Arts and others. She has performed on the All India Radio, Chennai and gives performances in the local sabhas. Sowmya has regularly been featured with her Guru, Smt. Suguna Purushothaman in all thematic concerts, lecture demonstrations during Chenani’s famed December music festival including Indian Fine Arts, Music Academy, Nada Inbam and Krishna Gana Sabha.
She has completed the Vidwat level exams conducted by the Tamilnadu Government in Carnatic music theory and has extensive knowledge on the nuances of the art. She has also undergone Voice culture training from renowned Ethnomusicologist, Dr. S.A.K. Durga and completed a certificate course from the Institute of Voxology, Chennai.
Sowmya, an MBA graduate from India moved to the Bay area in 2008 and since then has performed at various venues including S R Fine arts, Bay Area Margazhi festival, Sangati Center, Sangeetha Dhwani, Swaralahari (TV), Livermore temple, Concord Temple, SV Lotus and Sri Rajarajeswari Temple for Mahasivaratri.
Sowmya is a very dedicated and passionate teacher. She teaches Carnatic music in the Bay Area locally and through Skype.
Sowmya believes in strict adherence to aesthetics and padantharam (original learning) as taught by her gurus and her aim is that these should be flawlessly retained.
